Mary was born in 1837.  Mary's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Jane Cooke. She had four brothers and four sisters, named John, Thomas, Charles, Willmot, Ann, Ellen, Elizabeth and Charlotte.  She was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
