Charlotte was born in March 1844 in Golborne.1  Charlotte's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Jane Cooke. She had four brothers and four sisters, named John, Thomas, Charles, Willmot, Ann, Ellen, Elizabeth and Mary.  She was the second youngest of the nine children.
