Thomas was born on October 6th, 1816 in Prestwich and his baptism took place on November 24th, 1816 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1 2  Thomas' father was Michael Mather and his mother was Betty Street.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Margaret Scholes. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Wright, Michael, John, Charles, Ann, Alice, Betty and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.

‌Thomas and Esther were married in a religious ceremony on July 19th, 1866 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).3  There are no children.
