Michael's father was Michael Mather and his mother was Betty Street.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Margaret Scholes. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Wright, John, Charles, Ann, Alice, Betty and Mary.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.

‌Michael and Jane were married in a religious ceremony on January 5th, 1863 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).³   The family line is yet to be completed.
