Michael was born on February 26th, 1822 in Pilkington and his baptism took place on May 26th, 1822 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1 2  Michael's father was Michael Mather and his mother was Betty Street.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Margaret Scholes. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Wright, John, Charles, Ann, Alice, Betty and Mary.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
