Michael was born in 1790 in Whitefield and his baptism took place on August 1st, 1790 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1  Michael's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Margaret Scholes. He had two brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Jesse and Ellen.  He was the second oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 58 in December 1848 in Manchester.2
