Samuel was born in February 1786 in Prestwich and his baptism took place on February 12th, 1786 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1  Samuel's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Margaret Scholes. He had three brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Michael, Jesse and Ellen.  He was the oldest of the five children.
