John was born on October 5th, 1833 in Little Heaton and his baptism took place on February 9th, 1834 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1 2  John's father was Michael Mather and his mother was Betty Street.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Margaret Scholes. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Wright, Michael, Charles, Ann, Alice, Betty and Mary.  He was the seventh oldest of the nine children.
