Thomas was born in 1856. Thomas' father was George Mather and his mother was Ann Anderton. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Amy (Amey or Emy) Worsley. He had a brother and four sisters, named Jesse, Amelia, Sylvia, Violet and Maude. He was the oldest of the six children.
