Amelia was born in 1861. Amelia's father was George Mather and her mother was Ann Anderton. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Amy (Amey or Emy) Worsley. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Jesse, Sylvia, Violet and Maude. She was the second oldest of the six children.
