Thomas was born on February 8th, 1821 in Lowton and his baptism took place on April 1st, 1821 at St. Luke (Lowton).1  Thomas' father was Charles Mather and his mother was Mary Bently. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, James, Charles, Isaac, John, Ann, Betty, Ann, Mary and Catherine.  He was the fourth oldest of the eleven children.
