James was born on December 8th, 1826 in Lowton and his baptism took place on March 15th, 1834 at St. Luke (Lowton).1  James' father was Charles Mather and his mother was Mary Bently. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Thomas, Charles, Isaac, John, Ann, Betty, Ann, Mary and Catherine.  He was the seventh oldest of the eleven children.
