John's father was Charles Mather and his mother was Mary Bently. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Thomas, James, Charles, Isaac, Ann, Betty, Ann, Mary and Catherine.  He was the youngest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 15 in November 1851 in Lowton.  He was buried on November 17th, 1851 in Winwick.²
