Thomas was born in 1832 in Hollinwood.1  Thomas' father was Matthew Mather and his mother was Jane Taylor.  His paternal grandparents were Nathan Mather and Jane (Jenny) Birchenhead. He had three brothers and four sisters, named William, Matthew, John, Jane, May, Alice and Eliza.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
