Eliza was born in 1840 in Hyde.1  Eliza's father was Matthew Mather and her mother was Jane Taylor.  Her paternal grandparents were Nathan Mather and Jane (Jenny) Birchenhead. She had four brothers and three sisters, named William, Thomas, Matthew, John, Jane, May and Alice.  She was the second youngest of the eight children.
