John was born in 1843 in Hyde.1  John's father was Matthew Mather and his mother was Jane Taylor.  His paternal grandparents were Nathan Mather and Jane (Jenny) Birchenhead. He had three brothers and four sisters, named William, Thomas, Matthew, Jane, May, Alice and Eliza.  He was the youngest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 62 in March 1905 in Stockport.2
