Thomas was born in 1792 in Bolton and his baptism took place on October 7th, 1792 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Thomas' father was John Mather and his mother was Ann (Nancy) Greenwood. He had three brothers and six sisters, named John, Charles, James, Alice, Nancy, Ellen, Ellen, Ellen and Mary.  He was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
