Ellen's father was John Mather and her mother was Ann (Nancy) Greenwood. She had four brothers and five sisters, named John, Charles, Thomas, James, Alice, Nancy, Ellen, Ellen and Mary.  She was the fourth youngest of the ten children.  She died about 1797 in Bolton.
