Ellen's father was John Mather and her mother was Ann (Nancy) Greenwood. She had four brothers and five sisters, named John, Charles, Thomas, James, Alice, Nancy, Ellen, Ellen and Mary.  She was the fifth youngest of the ten children.  She died at the age of 1 in November 1795 in Bolton.  She was buried on November 17th, 1795 at St. Peter's (Bolton).²
