Thomas' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Hannah (Ann) Kirkham. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Alice Entwistle. He had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Amos, Charles, John, Alice, Ann and Jane. He had an adopted sister named Hannah. He died at the age of 22 in April 1864 in Turton. His burial was on April 22nd, 1864 at St. Anne (Turton).²³
