John was born on November 20th, 1830 in Edgworth and his baptism took place on January 30th, 1831 at Edgworth Independent.1 2  John's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Hannah (Ann) Kirkham.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Alice Entwistle. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Amos, Thomas, Charles, John, Alice, Ann and Jane. He had an adopted sister named Hannah.  He died about 1840 in Turton.
