Sarah's father was Ralph Mather and her mother was Margaret Smith. Her paternal grandparents were Edward Yates and Mary Mather. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Alexander, Joseph, George, John, Ralph, Lucy, Mary and Susannah. She was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
