Sarah was born on June 11th, 1862 in Heywood and her baptism took place on December 4th, 1864 at St. Paul (Bury).1 2  Sarah's father was James Mather and her mother was Rachel Nuttall.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Sarah Butterworth. She had a brother and four sisters, named Harry, Mary, Martha, Betsy and Rachel.  She was the oldest of the six children.
