Martha was born on August 7th, 1867 in Bury and her baptism took place there on September 1st, 1867.1  Martha's father was James Mather and her mother was Rachel Nuttall.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Sarah Butterworth. She had a brother and four sisters, named Harry, Sarah, Mary, Betsy and Rachel.  She was the third oldest of the six children.
