Rachel was born in June 1877 in Bury.1  Rachel's father was James Mather and her mother was Rachel Nuttall.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Sarah Butterworth. She had a brother and four sisters, named Harry, Sarah, Mary, Martha and Betsy.  She was the youngest of the six children.
