Betsy was born in June 1870 in Bury.1  Betsy's father was James Mather and her mother was Rachel Nuttall.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Sarah Butterworth. She had a brother and four sisters, named Harry, Sarah, Mary, Martha and Rachel.  She was the fourth oldest of the six children.
