Mary was born on September 1st, 1865 in Bury and her baptism took place on October 15th, 1865 at St. Paul (Bury).

Mary's father was James Mather and her mother was Rachel Nuttall. Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Sarah Butterworth. She had a brother and four sisters, named Harry, Sarah, Martha, Betsy and Rachel. She was the second oldest of the six children. She died at the age of 3 in September 1868 in Bury.¹

- Mary's 1865 birth was registered as SARAH in error. They already had Sarah born 1862. The daughter was baptised Mary.
  
  May must have died young as missing from future baptism records.
