Robert was born in September 1841 in Hazel Grove.1  Robert's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Margaret Shelmerdine.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Barber. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, James, William, Nancy, Mary and Margaret.  He was the third oldest of the seven known children.
