Margaret was born in December 1855 in Hazel Grove.1  Margaret's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Margaret Shelmerdine.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Barber. She had four brothers and two sisters, named John, Robert, James, William, Nancy and Mary.  She was the youngest of the seven known children.
