Mary was born in September 1853 in Stockport.1  Mary's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Margaret Shelmerdine. She had four brothers and two sisters, named John, Robert, James, William, Nancy and Margaret.  She was the sixth oldest of the seven known children.
