Thomas may have married Elizabeth (1811-1846) of Little Bolton. Thomas and Elizabeth from Edgworth had a son John Mather (1831-1832) buried at Turton.
7 June 1836, Thomas Mather married Margaret Shelmerdine at Leigh St Mary (the 1861 & 1871 records show Thomas was from Turton). Note: There was also a marriage between James Mather and Mary Shelmerdine at Manchester 8 April 1833, so there are two families!
In 1841, Thomas's parents were living alone in Edgworth.
In 1851, Thomas and Margaret (36 & 33) were at Handforth cum Bosden, Cheshire with John (15), Nancy (13), Robert (9), James (5), and William (1). Also present was James Mather (21, nephew, born Bolton)
In 1861, Thomas and Margaret (48 & 44) were in Ringley, Pilkington with son John (24, b.Bolton) and Mary and Margaret (7 & 5) born Hazle Grove.
In 1871, Thomas and Margaret (58 & 54) from Turton with daughters Mary and Margaret (17 & 15) born Hazzle Grove, Stockport (MMN=SHELMERDINE).
