Thomas' father was James Mather and his mother was Mary Barber.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Betty Thornley. He had two brothers and two sisters, named John, Thomas, Kitty and Kitty.  He was the second oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 1 in September 1799 in Edgworth.  He was buried on September 8th, 1799 at Turton Chapel.¹
