Nancy was born in June 1839 in Bolton and her baptism took place on June 16th, 1839 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Nancy's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Margaret Shelmerdine.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Barber. She had four brothers and two sisters, named John, Robert, James, William, Mary and Margaret.  She was the second oldest of the seven known children.
