Peter's father was William Mather and his mother was Betty Edge.  His paternal grandparents were <unknown> and Ann Mather. He had three brothers and two sisters, named James, Samuel, Richard, Sarah and Ann.  He was the third youngest of the six children.  He died at the age of 10 in December 1851 in Atherton.²
