Peter was born in September 1841 in Atherton.1  Peter's father was William Mather and his mother was Betty Edge.  His paternal grandparents were <unknown> and Ann Mather. He had three brothers and two sisters, named James, Samuel, Richard, Sarah and Ann.  He was the fourth oldest of the six children.
