Mary was born on August 29th, 1796 in Redvales and her baptism took place on September 4th, 1796 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Bury).1  Mary's father was Francis Mather and her mother was Elizabeth Chadwick. She had five brothers and four sisters, named John, Richard, John, Francis, James, Hannah, Sally, Hannah and Esther.  She was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
