Joshua was born in December 1899 in Bolton.1  Joshua's father was John Mather and his mother was Clara Turner.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Catherine Lawton. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Thomas, James, John, Stanley, Clara, Gertrude, Maud, Margaret, Ethel, Florence and Gladys.  He was the fifth youngest of the twelve children.  He died in December 1899 in Bolton.2
