Stanley was born in January 1901 in Bolton.1  Stanley's father was John Mather and his mother was Clara Turner.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Catherine Lawton. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Thomas, James, John, Joshua, Clara, Gertrude, Maud, Margaret, Ethel, Florence and Gladys.  He was the fourth youngest of the twelve children.  He died as an infant at 8 months old in September 1901 in Bolton.2
