Thomas' father was John Mather and his mother was Clara Turner. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Catherine Lawton. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named James, John, Joshua, Stanley, Clara, Gertrude, Maud, Margaret, Ethel, Florence and Gladys. He was the second oldest of the twelve children.
