James' father was John Mather and his mother was Clara Turner. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Catherine Lawton. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Thomas, John, Joshua, Stanley, Clara, Gertrude, Maud, Margaret, Ethel, Florence and Gladys. He was the fourth oldest of the twelve children.
