Ethel was born in September 1902 in Bolton.1  Ethel's father was John Mather and her mother was Clara Turner.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Catherine Lawton. She had five brothers and six sisters, named Thomas, James, John, Joshua, Stanley, Clara, Gertrude, Maud, Margaret, Florence and Gladys.  She was the third youngest of the twelve children.  She died as an infant at 3 months old in December 1902 in Bolton.2
