Joshua was born in June 1875 in Bolton.1  Joshua's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Catherine Lawton.  His paternal grandparents were Joshua Mather and Elizabeth Kay. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named John, Thomas, James, Fred, Mary, Catherine, Margaret, Elizabeth, Emma, Annie and Maud.  He was the sixth oldest of the twelve children.  He died at the age of 23 in March 1899 in Bolton.2
