Joshua's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Catherine.  His paternal grandparents were Joshua Mather and Margaret Fielden. He had a brother and a sister, named Thomas and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the three children. He had five half-brothers and a half-sister, named Thomas, Richard, John, Richard, Robert and Jenny.  He died due to a respiratory problem and/or pneumonia, Consumption (i.e. T.B.), at the age of 63 on June 22nd, 1865 in Massachusetts (MA).³
