Richard's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Jenny Rigby.  His paternal grandparents were Joshua Mather and Margaret Fielden. He had four brothers and a sister, named Thomas, John, Richard, Robert and Jenny.  He was the second oldest of the six children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Joshua, Thomas and Mary.  He died at the age of 1 on April 25th, 1790 in Walton-le-Dale.
