Thomas was born on January 4th, 1804 in Walton-le-Dale and his baptism took place on January 8th, 1804 in Bamber Bridge.1 2  Thomas' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Catherine.  His paternal grandparents were Joshua Mather and Margaret Fielden. He had a brother and a sister, named Joshua and Mary.  He was the youngest of the three children. He had five half-brothers and a half-sister, named Thomas, Richard, John, Richard, Robert and Jenny.
