John was born on January 31st, 1790 in Bamber Bridge and his baptism took place on February 28th, 1790 in Walton-le-Dale.1  John's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Jenny Rigby.  His paternal grandparents were Joshua Mather and Margaret Fielden. He had four brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Richard, Richard, Robert and Jenny.  He was the third oldest of the six children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Joshua, Thomas and Mary.  He died at the age of 29 in January 1819 in Walton-le-Dale.  He was buried on January 23rd, 1819 in Walton-le-Dale.2

‌John and Mary were married in a religious ceremony on August 24th, 1811 in Walton-le-Dale.4  They had a daughter named Mary.  There are no more children.
