Joseph's father was George Henry Washington Mathers and his mother was Jane Lee.  His paternal grandparents were James Mathers and Mary Ann Harding(?). He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Charles, James, George, Herbert, George, John, Albert, Jane and Alice.  He was the second youngest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 1 in 1885 in Accrington.¹
