George was born in September 1880 in Accrington.1  George's father was George Henry Washington Mathers and his mother was Jane Lee.  His paternal grandparents were James Mathers and Mary Ann Harding(?). He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Charles, James, George, Herbert, John, Joseph, Albert, Jane and Alice.  He was the fourth youngest of the ten children.
