Charles was born in September 1866 in Rochdale.1  Charles' father was George Henry Washington Mathers and his mother was Jane Lee.  His paternal grandparents were James Mathers and Mary Ann Harding(?). He had seven brothers and two sisters, named James, George, Herbert, George, John, Joseph, Albert, Jane and Alice.  He was the oldest of the ten children.
