John was born in June 1882 in Accrington.1  John's father was George Henry Washington Mathers and his mother was Jane Lee.  His paternal grandparents were James Mathers and Mary Ann Harding(?). He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Charles, James, George, Herbert, George, Joseph, Albert, Jane and Alice.  He was the eighth oldest of the ten children.
