Herbert's father was George Henry Washington Mathers and his mother was Jane Lee.  His paternal grandparents were James Mathers and Mary Ann Harding(?). He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Charles, James, George, George, John, Joseph, Albert, Jane and Alice.  He was the fifth youngest of the ten children.
