Jane was born in March 1872 in Rochdale.1  Jane's father was George Henry Washington Mathers and her mother was Jane Lee.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mathers and Mary Ann Harding(?). She had eight brothers and a sister, named Charles, James, George, Herbert, George, John, Joseph, Albert and Alice.  She was the third oldest of the ten children.
